Everyday, there are a gang of websites that I have to check before I get my day going: Allhiphop, vh1, Nah Right, ESPN, CNN to name a few.
But the site that I spend most of my time on (aside from VSB, ya know, when it WASN’T blocked at my job) is The Smoking Section (TSS). I love this site and all of the interesting music news, contests, and interviews they provide. You may or may not know this about me, but I’m a music junkie and a hip-hop head. And despite liking Ray-J (heh heh heh) I’m a serious music snob; ironic given that fact that I love crappy R&B just as much as anything.

Anyway, you never know what you’ll find at TSS and a couple of weeks ago, they put up something that I think every Black person in America should be forced to complete at some point in their life. It’s a quiz about the bestest (well at least my personal favorite) movie ever, Coming To America. I watch this movie every time it comes on television, edited or unedited. I just want to say how ‘IN THE FACE’ can brighten anyone’s movie experience. The best way I have experienced it was. The guy was sitting down in front and once the movie got quiet or there was a pause in the action. He jumped up and yelled the phrase whilst throwing up the black power fist. Coming to america…one of those movies that as a young african girl, you’re like ‘hmmmmm…..’ it’s funny, granted, but….’hmmmmmmm’
something about it just didn’t sit right with me, even as i chortled away… i think it comes of living an existence where you never see your life, your continent, your people, represented in a way that makes sense…. then when black people join in the madness, you’re like…. ‘okay, it’s only a movie, a comedy at that, don’t take it more seriously than it wants to be….’ but something still smarts about it. it certainly irritated me that the only african woman in the movie (imani) was an imbecile…
on reflection, i guess if there was more films out there that was more realistic, positive, celebratory about Africa, maybe i wouldn’t be as mixed-feeling-ish about Coming to America…
the whole ‘representing’ thing is a toughie – and i can feel where people are coming from when they say they’re just doing their thing, at no point did they sign up to represent the entire black race…. but there are times (like regarding this flick) where i find myself falling into that trap, where i’m expecting certain things of people – just because they happen to be black. flawed, but true….

I am awed by the levels of intimacy with “Coming to America” that Panama and so many readers have achieved. Though I have a head for trivia, and I have watched the movie seemingly countless times on over the years, I scrowled down in shame and quickly clicked away after the question about how many contestants at the Miss Black Awareness pageant were wearing thongs. (Honestly, the quiz is biased: Example: I never feel compelled to look at the contestants. Because a) I don’t have a penis, b) I wore bathing suits in the 80s and remember them as hideous, and c) I’m transfixed by Arsenio’s slumping preacher with the mottled makeup and the wig that looks like a Soul Glow curl without the juice or the curl). And I now suspect that my Randy Watson impression (which usually kills at home when I’m watching with my moms) probably sucks. Shit.
