Smiley Face: 10 reasons why women love Drake

And you know what they say: B*tches love the smiley face.

(If you’re unfamiliar with that particular line from Boondocks and think that Panama is just haphazardly calling women b*tches, well, go kill yourself. Thanks. – VSB Management)

When Drake tells us on “Best I Ever Had” that his buzz is so big he could probably sell a blank disc, well, he’s not lying. I’ve constantly stated that I don’t understand dude’s buzz – and I don’t – but I can’t deny that it exists. Dude’s got more buzz than Lil Kim at a wet bar.

With two Bullets.

Now, I’ll admit that Drake has talent. He’s a more than able wordsmith with clever-enough punchlines. But is that enough to really build a buzz this huge? Not really, especially when you consider how many WOMEN are loving this cat. Not to be to much of jackarse (and much props to the women on VSB who are hip-hop heads), but women don’t usually break most hip-hop artists. At least they don’t create their buzz, anyway. Women may well be indicative of how well they’ll do in the marketplace, but Drake doesn’t even have a tangible product out yet. All of his material is on the net. Even his much lauded mixtape, “So Far Gone” (download link) is a web-only product. Slap me silly and call me Susan, but I don’t think there’s a huge amount of women on Datpiff.com.

I could be wrong.

And he’s from Canada. Home of the floppy heads and beady little eyes.

And yet, b*tches people love Drake.

So this got me to thinking, what exactly is it about Drake that has the internets AND the women going nuts?

10 Reasons Why B*tches Women (and other people) Love The Smiley Face Drake

1. He’s lightskint. Let’s be real, women have been waiting since Al B. Sure Ginuwine for another musically talented lightbrite to come onto the scene and Drake fits the description. And this one doesn’t look like he’ll beat the brakes off of anybody. Women tend to only want darkskint men to beat them. Light dudes are great for hair tips.

2. He makes nice music for women. Even his ignoranter songs (i.e. “Every Girl”) are really deferential to women in a respectful way. His mixtape mostly sounds like R&B with sing-rapping (i.e. Lykke Li covers, etc), tailor-made for women. Sure he’s acting all cocky and talking about taking women home, but he also seems like he’ll take you home…to cook for you. What a nice chap.

3. He’s a singin’ a** rapper. The difference between him and Kanye is that Drake can actually hold a note, on his own, without Autotune, and women love guys that can serenade them, even if he’s singing, “you’re the f*cking best, you’re the f*cking best…” I’ve always thought that singing curse words was hot. Apparently women think so too.

So basically, 2+3 =

4. He sing-raps about women, a lot. Like on almost every song. The key to getting women interested in your music is to constantly make songs about women. Drake does this a lot. Quit the cocky little f*ck, actually, though even when he’s talking about h*es on “Successful” it sounds more like he means “big hug” than, ya know, h*es.

5. Though cocky, he comes off as a complete herb when he’s not on the mic. Because of this, women think he’s sincere and genuine and will probably sleep with him and will wear t-shirts that say “Drake’s Boo” on them, before he even has an album out. Motherf*cking amazing.

6. He’s romantically linked with all kinds of hot women. The more women you’re allegedly schlumping, the more women you can schlump. That’s like the 8th law of physics or something. Word to that Nig Newton. Thus far, he’s got Rihanna AND Bria Myles. Match: Drake.

7. He speaks really damn well. Got to give him props here. The boy speaks like he reads books – for leisure. Most rappers sound like idiots savants. Women love a man who can talk that smart sh*t.

8. He can actually rap. As much as I don’t care for him, dude can put together some words. Though in all honestly, he sounds like Kanye without as much personality. Strange, most women don’t like Kanye that much unless they’re not cute or bald.

9. He’s humble. Ah yes, he doesn’t come off like he’s better than everybody else and avoids drama at nearly all costs. Then again, I’d hate to get into a fight around him. He looks like he’d run away and get shot and end up in a wheelchair. Oh, wait, that’s his TV character.

10. He also calls himself Young Angel. Every body has to have a Young pseudonym. Women like Young Angel because it sounds corny enough to be some sh*t a woman would give him. Trust me, grown men don’t refer to themselves as Young Angel unless they’re Mexican and from LA. But women love cornball sh*t like that so it works.

That, in a nutshell, is Drake.

And because of it, he’s so far gone.

Tell me people, why do you think b*tches women people love Drake??

lolololol.

oh, and i’ve been to datpiff.com. and that shi!t kept crashing my computer but anywho…

eh. i like drake. i’ve been hearing about him for over a year now but never really paid him any attention. i clicked a few preview links but it didn’t really take at first (if it didn’t load fast enough i’d pass or mean to check it out when i wasn’t on the plantation, one joint i didn’t like). then they kept playing the f^ck out of ‘best i ever had’ so i decided to give the boy a whirl.

me no know about the lightskinned-ness (sometimes i think he’s cute and sometimes not so much) but i like his flow. the tone of his voice. the way he plays with syllables. his word play. pretty much all the things you mentioned. i like being able to listen to something and have to play it back like, ‘he said what?’ or catching something on the nth play that i didn’t catch the last time. *shrug*

I’ve been lovin him since he was Jimmy on Degrassi – PRE-wheelchair… I mean I literally watched every Friday at 5 on The N for the show to come on LOL…. so i guess it’s just carried on into his music career…… Can’t speak for no one else tho.

oh, and he’s tall. That helps. lol

Reply

3 SouthernGirl May 27, 2009 at 12:16 am

@Selah, lol. does the PRE-wheelchair make a difference? i never watched that show but i used to see the previews. there was all kinda of drama on that show. sh!t that had me clutching my pearls and i’m grown!

4 Selah May 27, 2009 at 12:27 am

@SouthernGirl,

it only makes a difference cuz i don’t really gets down with the wheelchair men. I mean – he was still hot after he got shot. But dang. I needs my mens to stand.

there was always some kinda drama going on in the show tho – that’s what kept me, teenager that I was, hooked!

He was not the business on Degrassi. I dont know what it is about Canada, but the two blk actors on that show were in serious need of a hair line.

OOh I loved Jimmy on Degrassi, pre and post wheelchair.. He just had this smile and just made me melt.. when I saw drake I was like.. HEY That’s jimmy.. then I heard the mixtapes and songs and it just solidified how cute I thought he was..

Though not a total fan of the lightskinned male, he is just too adorable.

I’ve loved him since Degrassi also. Pre-wheelchair. I always said to myself if there was a guy that I would give my v card to even if it was just a one night stand it would be him. LOL. And now that he is rapping OOOO weee… If he walked into the same room with my panties will automatically evaporate. He can def get it. OMG. He’s some Fine A** Wine a la the Steve Harvey Morning Show. I will drink his a**. Okay I’m also hornee as fcuk.

Before I head to bed can I just thank the Orlando Magic from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to once again relish in the failure of Lebron James and the NBA Cavaliers (no I will not strike thru the NBA Cavs and put in Cleveland, its been abundantly clear since the summer of 2003 what the league has been trying to do with James and any team he’s on so let them live and die with their lack of integrity)

I’ve been holding back on using this clip but really I’ve had two frontrunners call me to start a preemptive plea cop to the failure of the “chosen one”. I hope Nike spent a billion dollars for those Lebron/Kobe commercials. It will be like a more expensive version of those 19-0 New England Patriots shirts the starving kids in Afghanistan wear now. Oh and I fully expect Stern to pull out all the stops in game 5 and start allowing Lebron to take shots worth 5 – 10 points depending on the score. Hey they’ve been making up the rules as they go along so far right. Ah but this isn’t about hate, this post is about joy. I can’t wait for Young Money rappers to start making songs incorporating the epic failure of the Cavs this spring.

@Dorian G., Not to directly call you a hater, but hey if the Cap fit let them wear it. I would love this post if you strike out Bron Bron and insert Kobe, when a few plays are called in Lebrons favor then everyone wants to cry foul. That stuff happens all the time at Lakers game all Kobe and his receding hairline has to do is make that ugly arse face like he’s about to cry and the ref comes running. The Cavs played a dern good game last night that sadly ended in defeat.

me still like you…….

I’ve been listening to Drake Aubrey for a couple years now and i just dig dude because he’s clever… I fronted on him for a min when i realized it was freaking Wheel chair Jimmy with a mixtape but i gave him a shot and Overdose on Life kept me listening… I’m just sorta irritated with his music flooding the airwaves, imo that is the fastest way to kill a new artists career, and a lot females do love the light skin dudes just like a lot of guys like light skin chicks (it’s scientific fact people lol)… I’m not to keen on calling him young angel though, hell i don’t really like his rap name to much , but a man who is not some type of Spanish/Latin with Angel in his nickname seems super duper suspect to me… And he’s really not cute but his voice is nice :)

but a lot of light skin girls love dark skin dudes and a lot of light skin dudes love dark skin girls. not only in the black community but you can see it in different versions in other races such as dark haired/eyed 2520 men loving light haired or blond blue eyed 2520 women and vice versa etc. back to the black community I hardly ever see two light skinned people together as a couple unless theyre
from a family with some of “Blue Vein Society” mentality or some other form of psychosis.

My theory: Either those girls just don’t go online much (not likely) or people feel guilt for preferring lighter skin, lest they cop to some vestigial slave mentality (more likely).

I know right. Sorry to be the wet blanket but why do some of us folks need to put down black people whether they are light or dark; it’s all good to me. Coco was probably just joking (I hope/think) but it’s still messed up. We got to get over this. This is the 21st century, the new millenium and all that good stuff. Break the chains, hold hands and “come together right now”. My color is in the middle (not that it matters) but I hate hearing people put down real light or dark people it causes too much division.

I am on the lighter scale of complexion.. But I consider myself a “light brown”.. not red or yella… as we southerners like to label it (i have the complexion of a Pacific Islander)… I have always been attracted to darker complexions.. I think it was because although I am bi-racial.. My mother has very dark skin.. and her being the role model she is… I always wanted to be just like my mother(wished i had a darker complexion). My mothers family is Very Dark..like Alex Wek, Seal, Wesly Snipes dark and I was always the “bright sheep” in the family. It’s funny, because a lot of people assume that becasue you have a fair complexion, and may have loosely curled hair, “you think you are all that” or you may get passes because of your looks. Or they may coin you as “prissy”… This is So not true… For the person who wrote the post earlier about never seeing a light-skinn-ed thug… PLEASE come to New Orleans, and check out our array of Creole Felons.. There are plenty for you to choose from…

i didn’t know what drake looked like until earlier today (where have i been??). i’m still stunned he was on degrassi!! i don’t find him attractive. but he is light-skinneded so that’s already a strike against his “physical appeal” rating. i’ve never heard him speak outside of his songs. and i never really knew who he was even with his radio banger “best i ever had” out. up until friday i was like “who is this drake fella??”

but i was intro’d to his mixtape this wknd during my trip to dc (he was on everyones ipod seemed like). his flow is nice, he has a nice voice. the rhythm of his rhyming is kinda hypnotic (i guess some ish chicks would dig). he has a mellow sound and his word play is smooth. and the way his songs are put together, he can still make saying ish like “you the f*cking best” sound quazi romantic and sexy to even an educated non-hood chick. the way he sounds on his sing-song-raps about women makes you WANT him to be fine so you could give it to him and get it crackin!! but alas he is not so my panties remain reserved for Idris. or Christian Bale. or Hugh Jackman. first come first served. track. gettin it.

en-tee-ways…. i’m not a hip hop head, so i can’t intricately breakdown or vouch for his credibility or lack thereof. i just like what i like and he is on my “me likey” list. but please note this is coming from the girl who still has “turn my swag on” as her alarm ringtone. don’t judge me. love me. like i was the best you ever had.

BUT….

truthfully if you watch any of these videos of Drake performing or in interviews you will see clearly…that he is a lame. his educated speech actually bothers me most of the time. probably because i feel as though either the interview guy or the rapping guy has to be a front. he’s not even attractive, and i love light skinned men…..really tho he doesnt even count as light skinned, hes more off white. and he doesn’t even dress well. dang drake.

i think that was a bit harsh. i do really like him. only in mp3 form tho.

im still confused on why these other women love him like they do. its like he’s….Pac or somethin. minus the thug life tattoo.

“truthfully if you watch any of these videos of Drake performing or in interviews you will see clearly…that he is a lame. his educated speech actually bothers me most of the time.”

So let me understand this right…he’s lame because he has educated speech? An indication of education makes one lame. I haven’t heard that bullsh** since high school. I don’t find guys who talk mumble jumble and end every sentence “nahmean” appealing. I don’t find guys who come up to me like “Ay whatitdoshawtee?” appealing. All in all the intentional destruction of the english language unsually goes hand in hand with unpaid child support dodging, no diploma having, felony holding ninjas. Give me mild manners, educated speech, and geeky swag anyday! :-) (gotta love those smiley faces!)

@Blue Skyez, no no no, he is a lame because he is a lame, not because he’s eloquent. michael eric dyson speaks and i lose my mind, drake speaks and crickets start havin sex.

wait i don’t think that was the metaphor i was looking for….or maybe it was….

anyways, being a semester away from an engineering degree myself (yes that’s supposed to show that i’m edumacated) i can appreciate education. i would just like his rhymes and his everyday speech to sound as though they come from the same person.

@TheChamp glad i could be here and sh*t

That’s not lameness. It’s geekiness and it’s quite secksy. Geek style has been secksy since about 2004 (I think) Just look @ women going wild over Pharrell (skate boy P), Kanye, Fonzeworth Bentley (sp?), Andre 3000 (nah he’s just weird), Lupe Fiasco (mixture of skater/geek)

Agreed. Geekiness is not inherently sexy. In fact, I’d argue that the above-mentioned dudes are more quirky and innovative than geeky and that’s where their sex appeal lies.

Drake is just that guy who lived down the block from you growing up. A few girls who didn’t know him too well mighta liked him, but for the most part he was ignored until his parents let him have a party with beer and weed. Then we’d all show up and pretend to be his friend.

Don’t be hating on my boy Jimmy from DeGrassi. LOL!!!
I’m actually kinda disturbed that I find him good looking since he’s really not the type of kat I usually go for.
Oh yeah and Comeback Season is a better mixtape than So Far Gone (in my humble opinion).
He really got props from me when I heard “November 18th”, being as I’m from TX and all. I was like who is this kat rapping over “June 27th” (SUC classic!!!)? Then he put out a screwed & chopped version of So Far Gone done by Mr. Rogers? He gained a fan in me.
I know way more dudes who appreciate Drake than chicks. Most of my girls don’t keep up with hip-hop, so I’ve had to school them on the awesomeness. But you ask a dude if they dig Drake and 8 out of 10 are fans, especially after “Every Girl”. Most of the kats down here dig “Nov. 18th” and “Uptown” (especially since it’s got Bun B on it.)
Panama the more you talk about hating him makes me think you really dig the kat. You finally had to admit you liked “Make the Trap Say Aye”–so go ahead and tell the truth…lol

I can definitely see why people find Drake’s music refreshing, although I’m not really a fan of dude like that. He sings a bit too much for me from what I’ve heard thus far.

Here’s a few reasons for his appeal amongst females though in my opinion:

*I think his appeal to women has a lot to do with the fact that there’s no one else out there(hip hop wise) who they can gravitate to like that. If you’re not into Rick Ross, Lil’ Wayne, Kanye, or *drawing blank cause it’s not many cats out right now* any other rappers, he damn near wins by default.

*A lot of females have psychological wiring where they feel the need to “have a man”. This plays out in reality as well as fantasy. Drake is just that “new guy” cause as I said above, there’s no one else out.

*Many females are drawn towards men whom other women like. They can say it’s because of their swag or whatever line they wanna feed you, but when OTHER chicks take notice and put a guy on that “list”, many chicks will hop on the bandwagon. It’s like once a dude gets a number of endorsements, others just follow suit or at the very least are a little bit more curious. Again, this plays out in real life as well as fantasy.

All of this is actual and factual.

@Blue Skyez,
It’s not necessarily being desperate, but moreso, as I mentioned down thread, conditioning. Many women are not ok with being the only single girl in their clique so some may even become attached to a guy because of that. It can be a variety of things.

@miss t-lee,

LOL. I’m still tryna figure out what that statement has to do with Drake having a huge female following. That’s like saying a lot of men bumped Lauryn Hill because a lot of male fans are desperate for a girlfriend.

@Me fail english?,

Simple. A lot of females want that male figure to attach themselves to whether it’s reality or just lusting for any entertainer that she may be feeling. Females go through this a lot in their younger years which is why little girls choose their favorite boy band member and claim him amongst their friends. But sometimes those characteristics and habits can carry over to adulthood. Throw in the fact the female-bandwagon effect I mentioned, and there you have it.

Reply

168 Monk May 27, 2009 at 5:43 pm

@miss t-lee,

C’mon now…many females are almost conditioned to have a man or feel like they need someone. Everything from fairytales, movies, songs, etc. plays a part and it might not be you per se, but granted, they’re out there. Most of them might not admit it though.

Light-skinned on light-skinned hatred is just very unbecoming, my friend. The buzz is warranted. I went to his show last night at S.O.B.’s and he tore it down. I’m no talent scout or record exec, but when you see this kid in person, you can just tell he has “it.”

The post pretty much sums him up. He’s one of the few rappers out here with some lyrical talent that isn’t rappin about smackin a b*tch up or d*ckin her down then ditchin her. “Best I Ever Had” is like a female anthem right now.

The light-skindedness is a plus, but I don’t think many people realize that if you look closely….dude looks kinda funny.

I respect him, as I do any artist, based off the weight of the words or the beat the song is ridin on. It took me a while to take Jimmy seriously though. All I could see was him in that wheelchair.

it’s funny, b/c I know more dudes who dig Drake than women. most of the women I know don’t even kow who he is. my younger sister was a die hard Degrassi fan, and I had to tell her that Drake was Jimmy…she could’t believe it.

as for the light-skinned thing, that maybe true, but i figure that most women who are on him like that are just happy that someone new is out, and he isn’t some fool hopping out the bed or making the trap say AYE!

It was like there was competition between the members of the group on who was the “king of rapping so fast that listeners spend hours debating on what was actually being said and swearing by their own foolishness lyrics rather than actually looking them up” or maybe that was just my cousins and me.

I really can’t say much because I’m not a Drake expert. I’ve only given him a few listens, but LL is a rapper that might have a pension plan in the game because of “catering” to the ladies as u say. Mase didn’t only appeal to females and he went from Murder Mase to Mase to appeal to mainstream audiences. Ja Rule sold more albums than a whole bunch of hard core artists while he was singing and made millions, something some artist never do, so I hope he wasn’t mad. Same for Bow Wow. Who doesn’t respect Big Daddy Kane? I’ve only heard him revered as a pioneer. So I said all that to say that if this dude is true to his craft, girls like it, and he’s selling albums why be mad? Girls like Lupe, and girls like JayZ too… i don’t hear anybody fronting on them.

Ok ok Panama, I agree with most of this list. But I must put my foot DOWN on this light-skin nonsense! He is appealing because of his sing-songy/rap/talkin with some sense qualities, not becuz of his skintone. To be quite honest, he not fine or cute…he’s just alright. I like Drake. I find him appealing, and he dresses nice so he looks even more enticing. Being light-skinned does NOT guarantee beauty!

But anyhoo…YES he does speak like he has some sense! And I love that he not trying to front like he from the lowest-of-lows-in-the-ghetto like most “successful” artist because it falls into that stereotype that sells. Bottomline: women like real men that realize their ass are just regular ninjas when the mic/cameras turn off!

I agree with your disagreement with the light-skinned thing. I think he’s gathering the same fanbase as Fab was when he came out. A rapper with a heavy pre-debut, mixtape following and plenty of ladies in his corner. The only difference IMO is the internet making one guy’s mixtapes more widely accessible and free.

Hey wait since it’s Hip Hop weekend can I unleash my rap music theory??? Aight here it goes.

What is rap but a rhyme set to music. When are rhymes most apealing? Exactly! During our formative years. So since this art form has thrived and evolved as the Masculine song. The Patriarchal song if you will. True singing is the language of love. (btw singing is an old method of primordial chest beating @ least I heard this about monkeys on some nature show once). So rappers are guys who want to be fathers teaching their children.

When your mind is free physical things don’t matter. In essence, freedom is a choice.

I’m not judging, I’m just making an observation. And if some of these rappers are truly “fathers” “teaching” their “children,” they need to stop spending money on cars, jewelry and clothes and start spending it on life coaches and psychologists so they can unlearn alot of the foolishness that’s in their heads.

And is it your mind that’s free or your spirit? I mean w/ what this country has done to black males; robbed them of their identity as men…

As soon as it stops attracting the cutest hottest women we’ll stop blinging up the world. Oh yeah a lot is two words.

@Voiceofreason,
yall really need to hear my song “single dad” I talk about real life situations, baby mamas, making legal money, being a dad tryna raise a black boy, and i get on the deadbeat dads. I speak on stuff people are affraid to or dont think mainstream will accept it.

255 Voiceofreason May 27, 2009 at 3:35 pm

@Voiceofreason,

I know a lot is two words. Thanks. I also know “blinging” is not a word; however, this post is not about grammar.

And the sooner black men get over the “what this country has done to me” shyt, the progress can begin. I know it’s difficult to be a black man in this country, but black men are strong enough in mind, body, and spirit to get over anything life throws at them; they just need to start doing it in a more mature way.

@Voiceofreason, Don’t hate @ what men are though and their roll. Sometimes it is making that hard decision doing that unthinkable for the greater good. Now it ain’t over dinner convo but all music ain’t dinner music either. N maybe if women completely saw n felt our grief things would go ‘over’ better… & by all means expound on you use of ‘mature’ an adjective I don’t like.

Reply

258 Voiceofreason May 27, 2009 at 5:04 pm

@WuDaMan,

No one’s hating. You don’t know me well enough to imply I’m not sensitive to black men. To be honest I’m incredibly sensitive to what black men deal with, but at some point some men need to stop coming up with excuses for why life is so hard, and just deal. The easy way out of dealing with problems (sex, drugs, alcohol, irresponsible use of money) clearly isn’t effective. This is why I initially suggested that people start considering life coaches and therapy.

And I don’t need to expound on the word mature. Webster did it for me; he can do it for you too!

Even though you’re getting on my nerves today, I still think you’re good people b/c you drove all the way to Pgh from Philly and paid for brownies and ice cream you barely ate. My work day is over. Gotta go!

LOVE me some Drake. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I figured out he was Jimmy from Degrassi. I loved that show…still watch every now and again.

He flows nice…and I love that he sings as well. I haven’t been a fan of rap in a long time. Drake is refreshing and my ears don’t feel quite so assaulted when listening to him.

He’s a talented kid…Props to Drake/Aubrey.

Gotta love Drake. I was on him a couple years ago when he did a remix with Trey Songz. I didn’t pay him much attention because he’s from Canada, but when I found out that he was the same dude who did “Lust For Life” AND he was partly raised in my city, Memphis, I fell in love. He’s Canadian, but he definitely has a southern swag. That November 18 gets me every damn time! Whatchu know about that Screw, boy???

His ability to speak well is undeniable, too. Actually, him being light-skinned is a minus for me, but it works for him some kind of way–a glow worm kind of way. LOL. Some people just have it and he’s one of those people.

And I’m on Datpiff.

Hmmmm….I will admit that I had a small crush on Drake when I met him 2 years ago. He was surrounded by people with big egos yet he seemed so humble. But, fast forward to 2009 where I heard he can’t freestyle and he lost all kind of credibility with me. I have more respect for Joe Camel than I do Drizzy.

He is still a decent actor and I will always recognize him a wheelchair Jimmy..GO DEGRASSI!

I mean he can still get it but the respect for his craft isn’t there.

He really can’t freestyle. But dude can flow

Being on degrassi kinda killed me from wanting to listen the 1st time I heard he was rapping a couple years ago in I think it was XXL.

So far gone ain’t bad but he really sounds like he just hops from wayne to kanye flow

Yeeaaahhhhh

I’m tired of hearing that in every other song

Yeaaaahhhhh

But after hearing him on flex freestyling I realized he’s not that good. At least he came off the top but damn, u gotta do betta

Yeaaahhhhh

It’s official. I am old. I have never heard of Degrassi, and I didn’t know who Drake was until about two weeks ago when a friend pointed out he would be performing at Love in DC. I of course responded with the blank stare because I had never heard of him. I have since seen the video of his performance at Love and the crowd appeared to really dig him and knew all the words.

I guess he’s okay looking, but since i’m 10 years his senior I can’t help looking at him like he’s a kid.

I do admit I like some of the songs he has out, but it stops there. He is not cute at all. He has really droopy features. It looks like his eyes, nose, and mouth are about to fall off of his face. So not cute!

Maybe b/c I’m a dark skinned woman who loves chocolate men (and they love me too), but very rarely do I encounter a light skinned man that I think is attractive or sexy. No offense to anyone, but their features usually seem a little off to me and it stands out more b/c of the light skin. So although I think Drake’s songs have a nice vibe to them, this does not extend to me liking his droopy a@# face.

@LadyS,

“No offense to anyone, but their features usually seem a little off to me and it stands out more b/c of the light skin.”

Agreed. I’ve always thought lighter skin calls more attention to ugly features. You have to have an exceptionally cute face to be called handsome and bright-skinned

Drake = Ne-yo + Weezy

This explains his popularity. That plus the arm candy (Rihanna, Bria Myles) and word-of-mouth buzz accords a certain level of (brand) name recognition- something like the Kardashians…

i dont fully agree with the fact that ladies love drake because he’s light skinned. i just feel he/the song-writer was blessed enough to make some catchy tones that grows on you quickly.

i wouldn’t kill myself to get close to him (besides the fact that i am fair), i just don’t find him facially attractive…..he’s like a mature scruffy chris brown…. :-/

1. I listen to/love hip hop
2. No, I’m not on datpiff but I do regularly check nahright and some other music blogs that feature artists who aren’t out in the mainstream.
3. Drake has good lyrics, nice beats behind him, singing on point. I like his flow and (forgive me for saying it) swagger. He’s got that cocky-clever thing like Wayne and the unassuming flow that Ye used to have before he got big in the head.
truthfully, I don’t find him that attractive but I think he’s super talented to be able to go back and forth from Jimmy on Degrassi to a believable rapper with cred from the southern US to Canada.

1-4 are right on the money. And another one is that women love those so-called triple threat types (substitute rapping for dancing).

And you already know with so many cats, rapping is the stepping stone to the logical end of doing feature films. This fool might be a leading man pretty soon, in a billion chick flicks…about exes.

So enjoy his music while you can…and he is throwing heat (see “One More Time”)

Well, my opinion is that, I don’t think it’s because he’s “light-skined” we all adore him.. It wouldn’t make any difference if he was “Brown” or a “Dark” skinned guy, as long as he is sexy and he could sing.. I think alot of women like Drake because he is real, sincere, and he can sing! I’ve seen him in interviews and he is such a sweetheart.. He is one of those laid-back, reserved types and knows how to speak well, I mean, the boy has it down packed that’s why alot of young women love him! I personally think Drake and Jeremiah, the guy that sings “Birthday Sex” are on the same level but Drake had a better hit song than Jeremiah.. If it was the other way around, it wouldn’t matter.. Now commenting on the “Best I Ever Had” video, I didn’t really understand it.. Where was Kanye going with it? Basketball game, Drake being a coach? Don’t get it.. I totally give the video a 2 thumbs down.. All I have to say is Drake, word to the wise, “Never let Kanye West direct any of your videos again!”

wheel chair jimmy? hmm… I first heard about his music career maybe late 2005. mentally noted he might be amongst the better rappers alive but underground. I thought cool he’s not in the spot light… so maybe there is more to him because he already has semi-fame being on nickelodeon star. It was only a matter of time (now 2009) but cool he’s making great music and he’s not truly known by most people for it. so he has this way with having a conversation with the listener in his songs… okay I can dig that. I can do it too. but because he thought of making his music career by doing this… it makes him cooler. a lot of people listening are like damn I feel that… he just put into words for me. and the girls are like well he’s sort of a dog but at least he’s keeping it real. the whole singing and rapping stuff… a lot more can do it… but why don’t they because that’s where they messed up (maybe being afraid to over step a boundary and not get respect) hey if tyra had the guts to try and start a music career singing… if most writers singing can also rap why not just do it? hmm trey songz… good dude. i like him too… now does it mean I want to throw myself at them? no. look I will never go up to drake to appear to be another fan or groupie. he has enough men doing that already. I appreciate his art, respect his talent.. With that said he is much needed right now because too many people revolve their lives around who they idolize… only dufus’ pretend to be talented.

p.s. datpiff is only one of a few others I download and find music from… all the time. so yeah “the champ” you’re probably mistaken or just can’t picture it.
